Function and location
The wiring harness with integrated ignition starter switch connects the mechanical ignition lock/steering lock to the vehicle's electrical system. Depending on the key position, it switches terminals 30 (permanent positive), 15/15X (ignition), 50 (starter) and 15R/P, thereby transmitting the start and ignition signals to the starter motor and electrical system.
The switch is located on the back of the ignition lock/steering lock; the wiring harness itself runs behind it, behind the ignition lock in the steering column trim.
How can you tell an ignition starter switch is defective?
- Starter motor does not turn, or only turns sporadically, when attempting to start (terminal 50 interrupted)
- Ignition does not switch on reliably, consumers on terminal 15/15X without power
- Starter motor keeps turning even after releasing the key (terminal 50 sticking)
- Irregular contact when turning the key, brief dropouts in the electrical system
