Condition of this part

Genuine Mercedes-Benz part from stock, in the original bag (supplier CFW / Carl Freudenberg, Made in Germany). The seal itself is unused and free of cracks. The film and label have yellowed, and there is a residue of tape on the bag.

Function and location

The shaft seal seals the input shaft of the rear axle differential – i.e. the drive pinion – against the axle cover and keeps the hypoid oil in the housing. The sealing lip, made of ACM rubber, runs with a right-hand thread on the shaft journal and actively pumps any escaping oil back into the housing; an upstream dust lip keeps dirt and splash water away from the main lip.

Installation location: at the rear axle final drive, at the input of the drive pinion, behind the flex disc of the propshaft.

Oil stain or damp spot at the front of the differential housing, in the area of the propshaft flex disc
Visible oil leakage once the sealing lip has become hard or cracked
With persistent leakage, the oil level in the differential housing drops over the long term

Several seals of similar design are fitted on the same rear axle. What matters is an inner diameter of 37 mm, an outer diameter of 61 mm and an overall height of 14 mm. Please re-measure your old seal before ordering.

differential inputs that require 40 × 70 × 11/15 mm or 40 × 70 × 12/16 mm
manual transmission, automatic transmission and engine – this seal belongs exclusively at the differential
the eight-cylinder models W124 400 E, 500 E, E 420, E 500, W210 E 420, E 430, E 55 AMG as well as C 36 and C 43 AMG – a larger rear axle final drive is fitted there
