Condition of this part

Used, without key. Function was tested at removal with the key available at the time – the cylinder turned smoothly, the mechanism engaged correctly. The key has since been lost. Further details: see photos.

Function and location

This steering lock from the W201/W124 model generation consists of a solid die-cast block with lock cylinder, locking pin arm and round ignition starter switch (terminals 30/15/50). The locking pin locks the steering column when the key is removed. On the diesel version, a vacuum valve with two hose ports is additionally housed inside: when the key is turned back to 0, vacuum is switched through to the stop diaphragm on the injection pump and the engine switches off.

The steering lock is installed on the steering column tube under the steering column trim, fastened via the flange holes.

How can you tell if an ignition lock or steering lock is faulty?

  • The key is hard or impossible to turn
  • Locking pin doesn't engage or disengage cleanly – steering stays locked or jams while driving
  • Ignition starter switch switches unreliably – starter motor or loads on terminal 30/15/50 fail
  • on diesel models: engine doesn't switch off when the key is turned back to 0 (vacuum valve faulty)

⚠ Important: compare the part number before buying

Design and connector pattern are decisive – several steering lock generations exist. This part belongs to the W201/W124 era (housing stamping 1900.01, approx. 1982–1997). Please compare the design, connector pattern and – if present – the part number of your old part 1:1 with the photos.

This is the version for automatic transmission – the connection to the selector lever/park lock mechanism is mechanical. Please also compare the connector pattern and linkage with your old part.

Does not fit:

  • the older design of the W123/W126 era (stamping 0160 / 0160 S)
  • W202 / W210 (different steering lock family)
  • vehicles with immobilizer/transponder from later model years

FAQ

No key is included – how do I get a matching one?

Mercedes can cut a duplicate at a dealership using the lock number (proof of ownership required), specialist workshops can read the lock code directly from the cylinder, or you fit a new lock cylinder complete with keys – matching blanks are freely available. Alternatively, the part is also suitable as a parts donor for the housing, locking pin and ignition starter switch.

Does the diesel version also fit a petrol model?

Yes, the diesel version can also be used on the petrol version – the additional vacuum connections then simply remain unused. The reverse, a petrol lock in a diesel, does not work.

Does the keying match the other locks on my vehicle?

No. The steering lock comes with its own keying and therefore does not match the rest of your vehicle's lock system (doors/trunk) unless you have the cylinder re-keyed.
