Condition of this part
Used and tested: the included key turns cleanly through all positions, the mechanism engages correctly. The round ignition/starter switch is fitted, the contact pins are straight and clean, and the two-pin auxiliary contact with cable and connector is present. The casting shows age-related patina but no cracks. The product photos show a representative example; all units are supplied with a key.
Function and location
The steering lock of the W201 and W124 model series consists of a die-cast housing with lock cylinder, a locking pin to the steering column, and a round ignition/starter switch with terminals 30, 15 and 50. When the key is removed, the locking pin extends and locks the steering spindle. The ignition/starter switch handles ignition, starter and the switched consumers.
The lock is installed on the steering column tube under the steering column trim; it is secured via the clamp flange.
How can you tell if an ignition lock-steering lock is faulty?
- The key is hard to turn or won't turn at all
- The steering spindle stays locked because the locking pin does not retract
- The starter motor does not engage despite turning the key (terminal 50 interrupted)
- Ignition or switched consumers fail intermittently (loose contact at terminal 15)
- The contact pins in the ignition/starter switch are bent or dirty and switch unreliably

⚠ Important: compare the version before buying
The lock is supplied with its own lock cylinder and the included key; it will not open doors, the glovebox or the trunk lid. This version is for petrol models with manual transmission: diesel vehicles require the version with vacuum shut-off, automatic vehicles the version with linkage to the key-removal interlock.
The W201 and W124 model series were fitted with different wiring harnesses over the production period – please compare the round ignition/starter switch and the small auxiliary connector against your old part using the photos. Several identical units of this steering lock are available; each has its own lock with its own key.
Does not fit:
- W123, W126 and W116 – these use a different steering lock design with a different cylinder
- W202, W210, W140 and all model series with an electronic immobilizer
- Vehicles from other manufacturers with an externally similar steering lock
- Diesel vehicles and vehicles with automatic transmission
