Condition of this part
Used removed part, untested and in as-found condition. The aluminium heat sink is extensively scratched, matte, and coated with a whitish-grey oxide film. The black plastic base plate carries dirt and oil-film residue, especially around the two round sockets. A rivet point on the housing edge shows light corrosion residue, the edge of the coaxial metal socket shows white crumbly deposits, plus a blue felt-tip marking from warehousing. On the positive side: the housing and all three mounting lugs are undamaged, there are no cracks and no signs of burning or scorching, the contact pins of both round connectors are complete, straight, and free of visible verdigris, and the riveting is intact. No functional test was carried out.
Function and location
The EZL is the ignition switching unit of the fully electronic Mercedes ignition system with ignition curve adjustment. It receives the speed and TDC signal from the crankshaft sensor, as well as the load signal via vacuum or throttle valve, calculates the ignition timing from this using a stored map, and switches the output stage for the ignition coil. This eliminates the centrifugal and vacuum advance mechanisms in the distributor.
The unit is installed as a box module with an aluminium heat sink in the engine bay on the bulkhead or the strut tower, bolted via three mounting lugs.

- Engine no longer starts, because no ignition is triggered
- Rough idle or jerking due to an incorrectly calculated ignition timing
