Condition of this part
Used removed part, untested – a functional test has not been carried out, so proper function is not guaranteed. The type plate is complete and clearly legible. The housing shows no cracks, all three mounting lugs are undamaged, the Torx screws are present, and there are no signs of burning or scorching. The contact pins of both round connectors are bright and complete; the coaxial socket is slightly tarnished on the inside. The aluminium base plate carries dried-out thermal paste and a whitish-grey oxide film; the top shows storage dust.
Function and location
The EZL is the ignition control unit of the map-controlled ignition system. From the speed/reference mark sensor, load signal, and engine temperature, it calculates the ignition timing, drives the ignition output stage, and makes the mechanical centrifugal and vacuum advance in the distributor unnecessary.
The installation location is in the engine bay on the bulkhead or the wheel arch. The control unit is bolted via three mounting lugs and connected via two 4-pin round connectors and a coaxial ignition coil socket.
How can you tell an ignition control unit is defective?
- Engine starts poorly or not at all, if no correct ignition timing is calculated or no signal is passed to the ignition output stage
- Rough idle or jerking, because the ignition timing adjustment fails to occur
- Loss of power or knocking under load, if the ignition timing does not match engine speed and load signal
- Engine suddenly stalls while driving, if the ignition output stage fails
