Condition of this part
New part (NOS – New Old Stock), unused in the original Mercedes-Benz parts box with factory label. Gear flanks with intact phosphating, no wear edges or running-in marks, bearing journals bright, no rust. The box itself is stained and rubbed on the outside. Scope of delivery: a set of 2 shafts in one original box, as shown in the product photos.
Function and location
The intermediate shaft transmits the rotary motion from the timing drive to the oil pump and the distributor drive. Power is transmitted via helical gears for crossing shaft axes; the slotted claw and driver ends positively engage the following drive shaft or the distributor driver. Radial bores and a central face bore supply the bearing points with engine oil.
The shaft runs in bearing bushes in the engine crankcase, between the timing drive and the oil pump or distributor drive – invisible from outside and only accessible with the engine open or the oil pan removed.
How can you tell the intermediate shaft is faulty?
- Noticeable drop in oil pressure, as the shaft's oil bores no longer reliably supply the bearing points
- Erratic, fluctuating ignition timing, because the distributor drive is no longer driven evenly
- Rough running or ignition misfires as a result of the fluctuating ignition timing
