Condition of this part
New part from stock in the original Timken box, stamping ENGLAND. The cup is unused: the visible scoring marks are uniform manufacturing marks, there is no worn-in raceway and no rust. The box itself shows storage wear at the corners and closing flap.
Function and location
The cup is the hardened outer ring of a tapered roller bearing – the tapered raceway in which the rollers of the inner ring run. It is press-fitted into the wheel hub or housing and stays there. Cup and cone together form a functional bearing.
Installation locations are wheel hubs, steering knuckles as well as gearbox and spindle bearings in imperial sizing. The related combination of cup 02420 with cone 02475 is documented as the outer wheel bearing in trailer wheel hubs.
Part numbers: Cup 02420A. Matching cones, depending on the bore required: 02473 (bore 25,400 mm), 02474 (bore 28,575 mm), 02474A (bore 29,987 mm) as well as 02475 (bore 31,750 mm). In combination with cone 02474A, the resulting assembly has an overall width T of 21,001 mm. The bore of the finished bearing is determined solely by the chosen cone, not by this cup.
⚠ Important: compare the part number before buying
02420A is not the same as 02420: the A ring is 1,225 mm narrower. Both versions have a 68,263 mm outside diameter, but the ring width of this cup is 16,238 mm instead of 17,463 mm – resulting in an overall assembly width of 21,00 mm instead of 22,225 mm. In hubs with a fixed spacer sleeve or defined installation width, this is not a substitute; it is only uncritical where the preload is set via nut and cotter pin.
