Condition of this part
New part (NOS – New Old Stock), unused in the original VW/Audi parts box. The running surface shows no belt-wear marks, the eccentric hub shows no tool marks, and there is no rust present. The box itself is yellowed with age and torn at the edges.
Function and location
The tensioner pulley tensions the timing belt between the crankshaft, camshaft and injection pump sprockets and holds it at the correct preload so that valve timing and injection timing do not drift. It is a mechanically (manually) adjustable metal design: using the eccentric hub and the two face holes, it is turned with a pin wrench and then clamped with the centre nut. A seized bearing in this pulley is a classic cause of belt failure and engine damage, which is why it is replaced together with every timing belt change.
The pulley is installed at the front of the engine in the timing belt compartment behind the timing belt cover, on the stud between the crankshaft sprocket and the camshaft sprocket (slack side). On the Golf, Jetta, Passat, T3 and T4 it is accessible from the pulley side. Dimensions: Ø 72 mm, bore 10 mm.
How can you tell the tensioner pulley is faulty?
- Unusual noise (squealing, grinding) from the timing belt compartment when the bearing is stiff
- Timing belt runs unevenly or jumps
- Valve timing and injection timing drift
- In the worst case, belt failure with engine damage
