How can you tell a cold start valve is defective?
The cold start valve of the Bosch K-/KE-Jetronic injects extra, finely atomized fuel into the intake plenum when starting the cold engine, enriching the mixture. It is controlled via the thermo-time switch, which limits the injection duration depending on temperature. If the valve fails, this additional cold-start enrichment is missing, and the cold engine starts poorly.
The valve is located on the intake plenum or the intake bridge, bolted via a 2-hole flange. Fuel supply is via an annular fitting, and it is controlled via a 2-pin connector.

⚠ Important: Compare the variant before buying
This version of the Bosch 0280170403 is identifiable by its black housing and is specified for K-/KE-Jetronic engines of the M102, M103, M116 and M117 series; an identical version in a different housing color from a different production period is also offered. Similar cold start valves with different end numbers are not directly interchangeable, such as 0280170412 for the later M103 from 09/1987, 0280170447 for 24V engines, or 0280170450 for the W463 from 1990. The BMW version also carries the easily confused number 0280170043 (transposed digits). Please therefore compare your old part's number 1:1 with our listing.
Does not fit:
- M103 six-cylinder from 09/1987 (require 0280170412)
- 24V engines (require 0280170447)
- G-Class W463 from 1990 (require 0280170450)
- older 280-series up to ~1977 (0280170022/023)
- Diesel models
- USA and Canada versions
