Vehicle system and function
The radial shaft seal seals the front end of the crankshaft or the vibration damper hub against the escape of engine oil. The swirl on the sealing lip conveys oil back into the engine, and the additional dust lip keeps dirt away from the belt drive.
Installation location: In the timing case cover at the front of the engine, behind the crankshaft pulley or vibration damper.
Condition: New old stock (NOS), unused, in the Mercedes-Benz original carton. Light signs of storage (abrasion from the carton) are visible on the outside of the rubber shell, and the carton shows signs of storage – see pictures.
How to tell that a part is defective
- ● Oil loss at the front of the engine behind the crankshaft pulley
- ● Oil-soaked belt drive or oil splashes around the vibration damper
- ● Replaced when changing the timing chain or during an engine overhaul

⚠ Width 12 mm with dust lip
Do not confuse with the narrow seal 45 × 67 × 8 mm (A 120 997 03 46) – please compare the width of your old seal.
⚠ Front only
The seal sits at the front in the timing case cover. The rear crankshaft seal at the transmission flange is a different part.
⚠ W123 diesel and W123 230 with M115
These engines use a 45 × 74.5 mm seal (A 009 997 45 47).
