Symptoms: how do you recognize a faulty warm-up regulator?
The warm-up regulator controls the K-Jetronic's control pressure depending on engine temperature – in other words, it determines how much the mixture is enriched during the warm-up phase. If it fails, the mixture is wrong exactly during this phase. Typical signs are therefore: problems when cold, fine when warm.

This distinction is important: the cold start valve, fuel accumulator and warm-up regulator are frequently confused, because all three cause "cold problems". Rule of thumb: the cold start valve affects the starting, the warm-up regulator the minutes afterward.
Causes: why does the warm-up regulator fail after decades?
Inside the regulator, a diaphragm, a bimetallic spring with electric heating, and fine control bores do the work. After 40 or more years, the diaphragm ages and starts leaking, the heating resistors burn out, seals harden, and the bores clog up with fuel residue. The result: the control pressure no longer matches the Bosch specification values – the mixture is wrong both when cold and during the transition phase.
Test it yourself: 5 steps before you replace it
- Visual inspection: Are the connector and fuel lines seated securely? Is the outside of the regulator damp with fuel (a sign of a leaking diaphragm/seals)?
- Check the power supply: With the engine running, there must be voltage at the disconnected connector – without power, the bimetal doesn't heat and the regulator stays in "cold mode".
- Check the heating element: Resistance measurement directly at the regulator connector – no continuity means: heating resistors faulty, the regulator must be overhauled or replaced.
- Measure the control pressure: The only reliable diagnosis. Using a test gauge between the fuel distributor and warm-up regulator, the control pressure is checked cold and warm against the Bosch specification values – this is also how we work at our test bench.
- Rule out: the click test on the cold start valve and standing-time behavior (Fuel accumulators) before you suspect the regulator.

How do I recognize a faulty warm-up regulator?

If the engine runs cleanly once at operating temperature, the warm-up regulator is the prime suspect – reliable confirmation comes from measuring the control pressure.
What does the warm-up regulator do in the K-Jetronic?
It controls the control pressure depending on engine temperature and thereby determines mixture enrichment during the warm-up phase. When cold, it lowers the control pressure (richer mixture), and as the engine warms up it raises it to the warm value.
Can I test the warm-up regulator myself?
